Bee imports
So far, the UK has managed to avoid the
Small Hive Beetle which has so devastated bee populations in parts of Europe and the United States.

Under new post-Brexit rules, queen bees can still be imported from Europe but packages and colonies can’t. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs hopes the ban will prevent the spread of bee pests and diseases. ITV report

Northern Ireland remains part of the single market and bee imports from Europe are still allowed. Unscrupulous operators are importing bees from Europe via Northern Ireland for onward to transfer to England, Scotland and Wales as a way of getting round the law. Read the BBKA’s response dated 8 March.

Good news!

Thiamethoxam, the bee-killing neonicotinoid will not be used in England after all. The Government had authorised emergency use on sugar beet but has reversed its decision in part due to the pressure from beekeepers and members of the public.

Thank you for signing the petition.

Managing our apiaries
